Memperhatikan Undang-undang No. 7 Tahun 2011 tentang Mata Uang serta UU No. 23 Tahun 1999 yang kemudian diubah beberapa kali, terakhir dengan Undang-Undang No. 6 Tahun 2009, Bank Indonesia menyatakan bahwa Bitcoin dan virtual currency lainnya bukan merupakan mata uang atau alat pembayaran yang sah di Indonesia.
Masyarakat dihimbau untuk berhati-hati terhadap Bitcoin dan virtual currency lainnya. Segala risiko terkait kepemilikan/penggunaan Bitcoin ditanggung sendiri oleh pemilik/pengguna Bitcoin dan virtual currency lainnya.
